Actualización de Hojas de Datos (Data Sheets) Prevención de Pérdida de Propiedades de FM – Mayo de 2025

FM: Un Nuevo Capítulo en la Protección Contra Incendios

Para reducir los riesgos en edificaciones en desarrollo, nuevas y construidas, es importante contar con pautas de ingeniería comprobadas. Las hojas de datos de FM se constituyen como el material de referencia más importante a nivel mundial para prevenir perdidas en las propiedades.

Estos estrictos estándares ayudan a reducir la posibilidad de pérdida de propiedad debido a incendios, condiciones climáticas y fallas de equipos eléctricos o mecánicos. Incorporan casi 200 años de experiencia en pérdidas de propiedad, resultados de investigación e ingeniería, así como aportaciones de comités de normas de consenso, fabricantes de equipos y otros.

En Mayo de 2025 se llevó a cabo la más reciente actualización de las Data Sheets de FM, puedes conocer los nuevos documentos en este enlace.

DS 1-20Protection Against Exterior Fire Exposure This document has been completely revised. Significant changes include the following:

– Updated for consistency with FM Data Sheet 1-42, MFL Limiting Factors, and other resources .
– Updated exposure sprinkler design criteria based on recent research.
– Updated FM exposure fire loss information.
– Removed information regarding hazards created by vehicles when buildings are constructed over highways.
DS 1-22Maximum Foreseeable LossInterim revision. Minor editorial changes were made.
DS 1-28Wind Design Interim revision. The following changes were made:

– Transferred guidance on determining Kzt for hills and escarpments from the obsolete FM Data Sheet 1-8, Antenna Towers and Signs. Added a flowchart for the calculation steps and an example using the flowchart.
– Transferred a reference to the wind load design for chimneys from FM Data Sheet 1-13, Chimneys.
– Modified external pressure coefficients, figures and roof zone areas for steep sloped roofs.
DS 1-34Hail DamageInterim revision. United States and Australia hail maps were updated using the latest hail data.
DS 1-40FloodInterim revision. Minor editorial changes were made.
DS 1-42Maximum Foreseeable Loss Limiting FactorsInterim revision. Minor changes made to clarify space separation analysis guidance to be consistent with revised guidance in FM Data Sheet 1-20, Exterior Fire Exposure.
DS 1-53Anechoic Chambers Interim revision. Changes include the following:

– Revised the Scope, 1.0, to clarify the intent is for Radio Frequency (RF) anechoic chambers and not acoustic anechoic chambers.
– Revised Section 2.3.3, Sole Protection of Chamber, to clarify the installation of sprinklers at the ceiling if the ceiling height exceeds 25 ft (7.6 m).
– Revised Section 2.3.4, Halocarbon or Inert Gas (Clean Agents) Fire Extinguishing Systems
DS 1-57Plastics in Construction Interim revision. Changes include the following:

– Provided guidance and new information relative to liners and insulated ducts for heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
– Provided guidance for high-pressure laminates (HPL) and high-performance building envelopes.
DS 2-0Installation Guidelines for Automatic Sprinklers Interim revision. Changes include the following:

– The guidelines for when sprinkler protection is recommended within ceiling pockets has been updated.
– Editorial changes have been introduced to better clarify the recommendations offered in this data sheet.
DS 2-8Earthquake Protection for Water-Based Fire Protection Systems Interim revision. Changes include the following:

– Modified four-way riser sway brace spacing guidance to align with NFPA 13 (Section 2.2.1.1.2.3).
– Modified “G” factor values for sway brace design to align with ASCE 7-2022 (Section 2.2.1.2.2).
– Made minor editorial changes.
DS 2-81Fire Protection System Inspection, Testing and MaintenanceInterim revision. Significant changes include:

– Added recommendations regarding the use of automated pump testing in Section 2.9.
– Added Section 3.1.11.3 to provide supporting material for the automated pump testing.
DS 3-1Tanks and Reservoirs for Interconnected Fire Service and Public MainsInterim revision. The document was reaffirmed to be technically correct.
DS 3-7Fire Protection PumpsInterim revision. Minor editorial changes were made.
DS 3-10Private Fire Service Mains and Connections (New Title) Full revision. The following changes were made:

– Changed the name of the data sheet to “Private Fire Service Mains and Connections”.
– Improved the definition of private fire service water mains.
– Updated installation guidance for positioning underground mains beneath railroad tracks.
– Updated thrust block guidance for fully restrained pipes.
– Added new guidance for thrust blocks used with plastic piping.
DS 3-26Fire Protection for Nonstorage OccupanciesInterim revision. Added new Section 2.4, Ignition Source Control. (Moved from FM Data Sheet 5-21 that was made obsolete.)
DS 4-9Halocarbon and Inert Gas (Clean Agent) Fire Extinguishing Systems Interim revision. The following changes were made:

– Revised Table 2.2.2.1-1 in Section 2.2.2, Minimum Design Concentrations.
– Revised Section 2.3.4, Nozzles, to update the terminology “silencers” to be FM Approved discharge nozzle for “acoustically sensitive environments” and included associated design parameters.
DS 4-12Foam Extinguishing Systems Interim revision. The following changes were made:

– Reformatted Section 2.1, Introduction, to add general recommendations for the inclusion of medium and high-expansion foam systems.
– Updated Section 2.6.4.17, Alternate Test Methods, to include test liquids for Planit Safe that are allowable for SFFF and AR-SFFF.
– Updated viscosity information in Sections 2.5.4 and 3.4.5 on the compatibility of SFFF and AR-SFFF concentrates for use with variable viscosity proportioners.
DS 5-4Transformers Interim revision. Changes include the following:

– Added new recommendation in Section 2.1.0 of dry-type condenser bushings for new installations.
– Added new recommendation in Section 2.1.4 for replacement strategy of critical transformers.
– Added new recommendation in Section 2.1.8 to provide spare condenser bushings as part of equipment breakdown spare for transformers rated 100 MVA and above.
– Clarified the guidance in Section 2.1.5 for on-line condition monitoring recommendations, including FM Approved monitoring systems.
DS 5-12Electric AC Generators Interim revision. The following changes were made:

– Added guidance for evaluation of operators, specific to generator risk control.
– Revised guidance on high-pot electrical testing based on recent loss experience to recommend rewinding or replacement for generators with significant pre-existing conditions such as a history of vibration or issues with looseness.
DS 5-14Telecommunications Interim revision. The following changes were made:

– Revised the Section 1.0, Scope, to clarify the intent for facilities with direct current (DC) power equipment that use switches and relays. Facilities that use Voice Over Internet Protocols (VOIP) electronic equipment should refer to FM Data Sheet 5-32, Data Centers and Related Facilities.
– Revised Section 2.1.4, Wind, to remove the reference to FM Data Sheet 1-8, Antenna Towers and Signs, made obsolete in April 2025.
DS 5-32Data Centers and Related Facilities Interim revision. The following changes were made:

– Reference to FM Data Sheet 1-8, Antenna Towers and Signs, was removed; applicable recommendations were moved to FM Data Sheet 1-28, Wind Design.
– References to FM Data Sheet 1-45, Air Conditioning and Ventilating Systems, were removed.
DS 5-33Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Storage SystemsInterim revision. Changes include the addition of FM Approved off-gas detection and clarification of fire protection recommendations for outdoor containerized BESS.
DS 5-48Automatic Fire Detection Interim revision. Changes include the following:

– Revised Section 2.2.3, Smoke Detectors, to include additional recommendations for duct detector location and interlocking. These recommendations are based upon FM Data Sheet 1-45, Air Conditioning and Ventilating Systems, that was made obsolete.
DS 6-10Process FurnacesInterim revision. The document was reaffirmed to be technically correct.
DS 6-12Low-Water Protection for BoilersInterim revision. Minor editorial changes were made for additional clarity referencing water treatment program guidance in FM Data Sheet 6-23, Watertube Boilers.
DS 6-14Heat Recovery BoilersInterim revision. Minor editorial changes were made for additional clarity referencing water treatment program guidance in FM Data Sheet 6-23, Watertube Boilers.
DS 6-21Chemical Recovery BoilersInterim revision. Minor editorial changes were made for additional clarity referencing water treatment program guidance in FM Data Sheet 6-23, Watertube Boilers.
DS 6-22Firetube BoilersInterim revision. Minor editorial changes were made for additional clarity referencing water treatment program guidance in FM Data Sheet 6-23, Watertube Boilers.
DS 6-23Watertube BoilersInterim revision. Completely revised and improved guidance on establishing and implementing a boiler water treatment program, including guidance on boiler feedwater quality, boiler water quality and steam purity.
DS 7-2Waste Solvent RecoveryInterim revision. The document was reaffirmed to be technically correct.
DS 7-7Semiconductor Fabrication Facilities This document has been completely revised. Significant changes include the following:

– Recommendations redundant to other FM Data Sheets were removed, including fire protection inspection and testing, control room protection and electric utility system studies.
– The recommendation to retain a consulting firm specializing in seismic design for seismic zones was removed, because it is a building code requirement in those areas.
– Recommendations related to sprinkler installation around ceiling obstructions for waffle-style ceilings were revised for clarity.
– A recommendation was added to provide a hard-wired interlock that automatically switches over the backup nitrogen.
DS 7-11Conveyers Interim revision. Significant changes include:

– Clarified scope in Section 1.0.
– Consolidated and revised belt width, requiring sprinklers installed beneath in Section 2.2.3.5.
– Clarified fire protection recommendations in Section 2.1.7 for conveyors entering a building or passing through a fire wall.
– Defined different conveyor types in Appendix A.
DS 7-15GaragesInterim revision. Added recommendations on EV charging stations (Section 2.1.1) for electric vehicles (EV).
DS 7-25Blast Furnace Ironmaking and Basic Oxygen SteelmakingInterim revision. Minor changes were made to process safety guidance to align with FM Data Sheet 7-33, Molten Metals and Other Materials.
DS 7-26Glass Manufacturing Interim revision. Significant changes include the following:

– Updated process safety guidance to align with FM Data Sheet 7-33.
– Updated guidance on molten equipment cooling system supplies to align with FM Data Sheet 7-33.
– Clarified diagrams showing example fire protection nozzle locations.
DS 7-29Ignitable Liquid Storage in Portable ContainersInterim revision. Guidance on lecithins has been added in Section 2.1.3.10. These products can be treated as very high flash point liquids.
DS 7-33Molten Metals and Other Materials Interim revision. Significant changes include the following:

– Revised radiation detection and testing.
– Clarified molten equipment cooling system guidance and aligned with other molten standards.
– Updated loss history.
DS 7-39Material Handling VehiclesFull revision. Removed redundant recommendations and content.
DS 7-58Chlorine DioxideInterim revision. The document was reaffirmed to be technically correct.

– Added fire protection guidance for metal powders in combustible packaging.
– Updated loss history.
DS 7-86Cellulose NitrateInterim revision. The document was reaffirmed to be technically correct.
DS 7-103Turpentine Recovery in Pulp and Paper MillsInterim revision. This data sheet was reaffirmed to be technically correct.
DS 7-112Lithium-Ion Battery Manufacturing and Storage Interim revision. Significant changes include the following:

– Added references to FM Data Sheet 6-11 in the Electrode Manufacturing section and to FM Data Sheet 3-26 in the Cell Finishing section of Table 2.1.3.
– Added FM Approved off-gas detection inside ventilated hoods or enclosures.
– Clarified the recommendation in Section 2.4.1.2.1, regarding sprinkler protection within enclosures for process equipment.
